Murray's Wattle (Acacia murrayana) also known as Colony wattle, Sandplain wattle, Tjuntjula, Utjanypa, fire wattle, and powder bark wattle is another of the 40 edible wattle species.

A small short lived tree in the arid and desert regions it was harvested by aboriginal people and used to make a type of flour they turned into a damper style food  cooked in the ground using hot coals and hot rocks.

Roasted ground Wattleseed has a diverse number of uses from baking, thickening sauces, seasonings, casseroles and ice cream.

A beautiful nutty, mild coffee, some say hazelnut flavour it is enjoyed as a caffeine free alternative to coffee and in fact is excellent to make an Italian style tiramisu. 

Ground finely, you can produce an excellent scone or rock cake, top with Quandong Jam and cream whipped with Wattleseed Extract.


Wattleseed contains potassium, calcium, iron and zinc in fairly high concentrations. With a low glycemic index, they are good for diabetics, providing a steady stream of sugars that do not produce sudden rises in blood glucose levels.

Most vitamins are found except for C, B12 and riboflavin. they are high in fibre – over 30%.
