Australian Holy Basil (10gm dried)

A wild desert herb, Ocimum tenuiflorum, is an introduced species related to Asian Holy Basil, thriving in the drier regions of western Queensland.

An annual with lilac flowers this ingredient is cultivated commercially from September to May.

It has a fresh apple, cinnamon aniseed flavour and aroma, which lends itself to Asian style cooking.

    Holy Basil

Posted by Supatra Gill on 12th Jun 2019

Many years ago I found a patch of wild basil in Central Queensland and used it for a particular Thai dish that I loved but had not been able to make because of getting holy basil was impossible. So it was wonderful to discover this basil being marketed now. The 10g packets were well sealed and the basil nicely dried to retain its flavour. The Australian holy basil is not as pungent as the wild variety I remember. It is fruitier. I have created the Thai dish with it once and found that I needed to add quite a bit to really get the flavour. I will keep using it as a substitute for holy basil.
